Choosing the perfect palette

Getting the right colours for your data visualisations is perhaps trickier than it first appears. Many factors come into play and it's easy to become overwhelmed. A good place to start is to set a few basic ground rules such as those mentioned by user experience writer and speaker Sean Van Tyne.

Tips include varying both hue and brightness across your palette in order to maximise contrast. This is particularly important if you have large data sets. Going for a gradient across your colour pallet will also help it to 'flow' better and feel more natural for viewers.

Of course there are other considerations to bear in mind such as brand guidelines, colours to convey specific meanings (such as age or gender) and even how a black and white print out of your data might look.
